The suspension Smoke Chandelier by Moooi uses fire to create an authentically charred object. Thanks to an innovative manufacturing method, it is sturdy and durable in spite of its delicate beauty. With Smoke Chandelier, the designer Maarten Baas reflects its fascination for the fire element and lends solidness to ephemeral impressions.
Smoke Chandelier is shaped like a classical chandelier, partly destroyed so that only three out of six arms are intact. The wooden body is entirely charred and black, however the swung shapes, elegant carvings and delicate details remain visible. Thin cracks, created by the fire, run over the chandelier's whole surface.
During the manufacturing process, the wood is treated with fire to burn its surface evenly and in a controlled manner. Finally the object is soaked in synthetic resin to accurately preserve all details and cracks.
This extraordinary method turns every light fixture into a unique piece with unique surface structure and details that cannot be reproduced.
Like a classical chandelier, Smoke Chandelier is equipped with candle lamps, and because it does not feature diffusers, the final appearance and the lighting effect depend on the chosen lamps.
