Mooi is Dutch and means beautiful.
The third 'o' in the company name Moooi stands for extremely beautiful.
The Dutch lighting company Moooi has been founded in 2001 by design icon Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers and is famous for gorgeous and innovative designs within the interior industry.
One of its pillars being the creation of extraordinary lighting objects.Besides the designs of its art director and well-known designer Marcel Wanders, Moooi lights also source the ideas of national and international designers, such as Jurgen Bey, Bertjan Pot, Jasper Morrisson, Ross Lovegrove, Studio Job and many more.
Moooi lights reinterprets – always with a smile - classic light fittings like the chandelier and lamp shades with circular and angular shapes.
For example, Moooi offers three different variations of the chandelier by not only translating its stylistic elements into modern shapes but by transforming it directly into a modern design.
Apparently, the chandelier seems Marcel Wanders' favorite type of light to be reinterpreted.
He created for the lighting company Flos a chandelier with a unique 'cocoon'- like resin fitting referring to Taraxacum – Flos' design classic from 1960.Moooi lights also use exceptional materials such as polyester stretch fabric or cardboard and have an eye for special details like fringes.
And what about the lamp stand? Of course a little bit different than usual but why not: a life-size horse for a floor lamp or a rabbit for the table.
To put the fantastic world of Moooi lights into a nutshell one better relies on Moooi's own words: We all have the need to feel special, to feel unique and important and to know that our life makes a difference.
We are different than others and we want the world to know this.
“We are all individuals”.
We also feel the need to be connected, to belong to something that is larger than ourselves, to recognize ourselves in others, we want to be part of the team and we want to show this to others.
“We are all family”.
Apparently these are two contradictory challenges.
No one statement being more important than the next but together they make us very happy. For Moooi the challenge is to understand both and produce one answer.
