YOY

The YOY design studio was founded in 2011 by Naoki Ono and Yuki Yamamoto in Tokyo. Naoki Ono was born in 1981 and has a degree in architecture design from the Kyoto Institute of Technology. Yuki Yamamoto was born in 1985 and graduated in industrial design from the Art University Kanazawa. Both graduated in 2008. They designed interiors, created furniture and lights and are internationally active. Their works were awarded numerous significant prizes, among them the iF Design Award (Germany), the Red Dot Design Award in the field product design and the Good Design Award (USA). Since 2015, they have been working as guest lecturers/part-time lecturers at the Musashino Art University.

YOY's central topic is the analyse of the relastionships between room and object. The products designed by YOY are willingly optical illusions that surprise the viewer with their functionality and user-friendliness. In their works, the Japanese play with human perception and imbue objects of daily use with fiction. Canvas for the British design brand Innermost is, for example, at first sight a canvas with the representation of a chair that turns into a real chair slanted to the wall. Scribble is a series of table sets that, from a distance, seem to be doodles on the table. For the Italian light brand Lodes, YOY conceived the collection Hover that creates the illusion that the light shade is unconnected and floats over the stem.
