Design has to catch the spirit of the times and to give it shape by using the newest technologies and materials. There is no sector of interior design that demands more accuracy and innovation than lighting design. The Swiss company Belux GmbH has it all since more than 40 years. Belux takes care to manufacture new products in keeping with the times by collaborating with famous architects and designers. It is a success story.
The series Belux Cloud that comprises the large cloud creation Belux Mamacloud as well as the small table lamp Belux Babycloud for warm white LED sets pleasant lighting accents and wins the heart of design aficionados. The Belux Twilight floor lamp equipped with LED or halogene imitates the variations of natural light intensities and colours. The result is an appealing room lighting and ambient light.
Individuality is a common quality among designers also shared by Benjamin Thut. The inventive designer had the idea to turn the pneumatic spring of his car tailgate into a lamp base. This is how the adjustable Belux Lifto was created in 1985. This light is now available in a new version equipped with energy-efficient LED.
The suspension, wall lamp or ceiling lamp Updown with its mobile arm to adjust the light is another proof of versatility. Thanks to a design by Reto Schöpfer dating back to 1996, the common fluorescent tube was introduced into living rooms. With his smart wall light system Meter by Meter for Belux, the architect and designer Matteo Thun demonstrates how easily light can be used. Individually determined lengths and covers allow to meet any individual need in an unobtrusive manner.
The company based near Basel can claim that many of its products are award-winning. The already mentioned lights Belux Lifto, Belux Updown and Belux Meter by Meter were awarded the coveted red dot design award. The same goes for the multicolored beaming ceiling lamp with double light-emission Belux Auro by Hannes Wettstein and the high-tech yet appealing floor lamps Belux Economy and Belux Flat, the futuristic suspension Belux Fokus, the fascinating Belux One by One collection or the polyvalent lighting system Belux Slim. Belux lights are also on the prize lists of the Design Prize Swizerland, Good Design Award or Design Plus.
Big names of design have gone side by side with the creations by Belux ever since its foundation. The newest successful model Belux Cloud with a soft, organicalley-shaped and flexible shade from polyester glass fiber is a design by Pritzker price winner and star architect Frank O. Gehry. Lights like those from the series Belux Arba are also inspired by nature. The maple structure of the floor and table lamp looks like a tree and the lamp is also appreciated in homes for its pleasant light. The Japanese Naoto Fukasawa designed minimalist luminaires like for example the floor lamp Belux Leia or the series Belux Koi. Those who know and like Hella Jongerius formal language will love the Belux Blossom series with hand-made diffusers in refined colour combination. This series is one of the most appealing by Belux.
The company Belux GmbH was founded in 1970 by Thomas Egloff. Beside a core business in the lighting sector, that is manufacturing of products and individual light planning, Belux extended its field of action and started cooperating with manufacturers of furniture and companies like Vitra or the Italian Memphis, a designer group around Ettore Sottsass and Michele de Lucchi. The permanent interest in high-quality and artistical shaping led to collaborations with the architects von Herzog & de Meuron or the brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. Because of all these projects and designs, Belux has become indispensable.
