About the Collection Louis Poulsen PH Septima
The PH Septima is considered as one of the most refined suspensions by Poul Henningsen. When a prototype of the light was displayed for the first time at the Danish Museum for Decorative Arts (today the Designmuseum Danmark), this poetic showpiece was very well received by the public. The glass crown is based on a PH three-shades system, yet was complemented with four shades that were placed between the three original shades. All the seven shades consist of very delicate, yet sturdy Italian borosilicate glass. The shades of clear glass were treated so as to feature broad strips alternatively clear and matt. They are arranged so that each matt strip lies over a clear strip. In this way, the light spreads wonderfully, but also glare-free downwards. A beautiful glass ball on the tip prevents that dust and dirt get into the light fixture. Already in 1931, a smaller version of PH Septima 4 was launched on the market. The shades' sizes are based on those of the PH 4/4. The original PH Septima 5 lights have shades' sizes based on the PH 5/5. As Henningsen developed the PH Septima, he designed a metallic version that never went into production. The drawings were fundamental for the development of the PH Artichoke that was designed around three decades later for the Langelinie Pavillon in Copenhagen. In the 1940s, the production of the highly prized PH Septima and many other light fixtures was discontinued, because there was not enough raw materials. In 2020, Louis Poulsen makes the return of Poul Henningsen's refined light based on the PH Septima 5 with a glass crown composed of seven shades, including an improved suspension and reinforced glass for a longer durability and more stability.
