Louis Poulsen
Patera Collection

Design by Øivind Slaatto

The suspensions Patera were designed by Øivind Slaatto and launched on the market in collaboration with Louis Poulsen in 2015. The collection is a modern interpretation of the classical chandelier and gives modern rooms a natural, soft illumination.

Patera has a fascinating appearance from every angle. At first glance ball-shaped suspensions with wonderful perforations, the Louis Poulsen Patera suspensions prove to be light balls with a sophisticated structure. The Danish designer Øivind Slaatto drew inspiration from nature, more specifically from the Fibonacci sequence, known by all as a spiral pattern from the plant world. The designer wanted to create a kind of three-dimensional sudoku, pervaded with an intrinsic poetical spirit and filling the rooms with life. Starting from a natural shape and inspired by his idol Poul Henningsen, he developed a complex surface, spreading the light softly in the room. The rhombic, three-dimensional cells make possible that the light is glare-free from an angle of 45 degrees. The light emitted by the light fixture is distributed glare-free in all the directions and directed downwards. It shines partly upwards to the ceiling. Patera offers a unique room light suitable for human needs.

As an addition to the ball-shaped Patera suspensions, available in various sizes, the Patera Oval suspension was introduced and follows the same elegant design principles as the ball-shaped Patera. Øivind Slaatto and Louis Poulsen wanted to create a suspension with a light, minimalistic shape, both modern and functional and suitable for rooms with a lower ceiling height. Unlike the classical Patera, Patera Oval has a flat, oval shape, inspired by an ellipsoid's organical shape. It is entirely assembled by hand and enriches conference rooms, hotel rooms and lobbies with an atmospherical light and a diameter with of 50 cm. It can be suspended over the dining table to create an impression of space between table and ceiling. Patera Oval has a round aperture, optimizing the downward light and offering a soft transition to reflected light.

The Patera suspensions consist of a shade of matt PVC and a suspension of matt chromed aluminium and cast acrylic. Patera's significant size and magical lighting effect turn it into the room's focal point. The mixture of artful precision and relaxing authenticity lends living rooms and bedrooms coziness and elegance, and provides a welcoming atmosphere over dining tables.
