About the Collection Louis Poulsen AJ Royal
The suspensions AJ Royal by Louis Poulsen are Danish designer classics by Arne Jacobsen. The dome-shaped, convex shade has a distinctive appearance due to the ring-shaped cuts on its top and ensures an especially pleasant lighting effect.
AJ Royal was originally designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel located in Copenhagen, renamed Radisson Blue and now known as the Radisson Collection Hotel, Royal Copenhagen. Jacobsen designed the hotel as a total artwork, from the architecture to the furniture and even the illumination. The AJ Royal suspension is placed over the tables in the hotel's snack bar, in the lounge in the ground floor and in the Panorama lounge in the 20th floor. At that time, the light fixture was simply named AJ suspension. Its spherical design from the year 1957 is considered as Jacobsen's first step towards geometrical basic shapes that also distinguish later designs by the internationally famous Danish architect. Originally available in the three colours, light grey, dark brown and black, today the AJ Royal is offered in white and in black. In addition to both original sizes, it is also available in a smaller size since the hotel opening's 60th anniversary in 2020.
Besides, the AJ Royal suspension appears in its classical, graphical appearance and produces an even, immaculate light beam directly downwards and a soft light beam through the ring-shaped lamellae upwards, complementing the direct light with a diffuse illumination, which results in a cozy atmosphere. AJ Royal is the ideal light source over dining tables or for illuminating conference rooms or living areas.
Today, Louis Poulsen offers the iconic collection with permanently integrated LEDs. It is made of steel and aluminium and is equipped with a textile cable. An acrylic diffuser closes the diffuser below and ensures a glare-free, even illumination.
