About the Collection Gubi Bestlite

The Bestlite light fixtures were designed in 1930 by Robert Dudley and count among the icons of British lighting design. The collection comprises several table and floor lamps as well as wall lamps for steerable reading light, in addition suspensions in several sizes, suitable for the illumination of tables and counters.

The clear and functional formal language of the light fixture shows that its design is inspired by the Bauhaus movement. It became famous because no less than Winston Churchill had a Bestlite BL1 table lamp on his desk. Also many workshops and the Royal Air Force liked the Bestlite light fixtures because of their functionality. Today Bestlite is included in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum and in the Design Museum London. Today it is the Danish company Gubi which manufacturates the Bestlite light fixture in exclusivity and true to the original.

The dome-shaped shade is made of metal or translucent bone china porcelain, and the light structure is made of metal. Depending on the model, the structures have one or two arms, height-adjustable, tiltable or rotatable and enable to precisely direct the light. Various, refined colours and materials turn Bestlite into an eyecatcher which very well adapts in modern and high-class interiors. For example as a reading lamp next to the bed or in the living room as a desk light in the study or as a table illumination in the kitchen.
