About the Collection Flos Mayday
The multipurpose lights Mayday by Konstantin Grcic for Flos are primed and clear design statements. Mayday is made of recycled polypropylene and can be completely dismantled at the end of its life span to separately recycled its single parts - a contribution to sustainability by Flos.
"Mayday" is, as is generally known, the international distress signal in radio telephony. This notion refers to the French call for help "Venez m'aider". It was reduced to "m'aider" and finally written phonetically for English speakers and became "mayday". It deserves its name, because of its smart design, it offers help in every (illumination) emergency situation.
Its shape is inspired by the simple tasklights used in construction works. Its possible uses are also versatile. The conical diffuser is made of opaline, injection moulded polypropylene and constrasts with the orange coloured or black handle to be carried around and also serving as a suspension and a cable winder. With a cable length of 4,85 meters or 6 meters (Mayday Outdoor), a total weight of 750 g or 900 g (Mayday Outdoor) and a comfortable operating button on the handle, the Mayday can be placed in any desired place. It can be suspended on trees and rods, be laid on floors or on tables. Mayday can be used as a torch, as an additional suspension above a dining table, as a light source on a balcony, as a sturdy workshop light or as a decorative statement piece on the window sill.
The light fixture Mayday in 2000 was Grcics first collaborative work with the Italian light manufacturer Flos. Since 2022, the collection has also been comprising a merely outdoor light. The light source gets a protection against weathering influences through a water-proof, translucent conical shade, ensuring an IP65 protection level. The hooks of the Mayday Outdoor are available in colour versions different from the original version.
Cleaning instructions by the manufacturer: When cleaning the light fixture, please use only soft cloths. It is possible to moist them with water and soap or with a neutral cleaning product. Please, do not use alcohol or solvents!
