About the Collection Flos Cocoon

"Cocoon" refers to the appearance of the light fixture and to the Cocoon technology, actually a method to protect military vehicles from weathering. In the 1950s, Arturo Eisenkeil from Merano, Italy, came up with the idea of using the cobweb-like synthetic resin covers in furniture design as well. In 1960, the Flos Taraxacum and Viscontea pendant lights and the Gatto table lamp were all created by the Castiglioni brothers based on this principle. The products were re-edited by Flos.

These lights' delicate shell is not - as one might initially assume - a conventional textile that is stretched over the structure. In fact, whoever thinks of cobwebs when looking at the lights is much closer to the truth: the ultra-thin synthetic resin fibers are sprayed onto the structure until they form a fabric and gently envelop the underlying figure like a cocoon. The fibers can still be clearly recognized in the resulting surface and give the light fixture a natural, organic character - and make each lamp in the collection unique.

The Gatto table lamp by Flos is available in a small and a large version. It emits an atmospheric, diffuse light on sideboards or bedside tables. In the Taraxacum pendant lamp the soft synthetic resin cocoon envelops a "spiky" structure.

The Zeppelin pendant lamp not only shows the structure in the outer shell, but apparently also the candles of the "pupated" chandelier. The Zeppelin pendant lamp is a design by Marcel Wanders, a design in the tradition of the Cocoon classics, but created more than four decades after them and thus the best proof of the timelessness of the collection. At first glance, it becomes clear that Wanders was not just about connecting to the prominent predecessors. He rather continues the idea behind the spun structures and combines them with an ingeniously obvious association: an old chandelier that has been completely enveloped in cobwebs for decades and centuries in a forgotten castle ... A lamp with a mysterious glow that lights up recalls old fairy tales and invites you to dream.

Overlap was designed by Michael Anastassiades in 2017 and convinces with a minimalist shape that looks more complex than it actually is: the internal metal frame has the shape of two interlocking rings. The synthetic resin cocoon envelops the structure as a three-dimensional screen with clear edges and soft curves that appear different from every angle. The pleasant, diffuse light, the timeless shape and the unique material of the Overlap lamp make it a design object that suits in any sophisticated interior, whether modern or classic.

Cleaning instructions by the manufacturer: The light fixture should be cleaned with soft cloths only. It is possible to moist them with water and soap or with a neutral cleaning product. Do not use alcohol or solvents!
