Flos
Casting Collection

Design by Vincent Van Duysen

The T- or C-shaped lamps of the Casting series by Flos are particularly impressive due to their high manufacturing quality and their striking minimalism. The light fixtures are made of extruded aluminum, the base and the diffuser are made of die-cast, low-copper aluminum. All components are first sandblasted in order to obtain a porous surface and to ensure better adhesion of the paint. The outer shell is then given a double powder-coating in accordance with the Qualicoat standard. The first, epoxy powder layer ensures chemical and mechanical resistance, while the second powder final layer made of polyester makes the object resistant to UV radiation and weather. Ultimately, the painted surfaces are treated with alkaline and acidic cleaning agents, rinsed with demineralized water and subjected to a chemical conversion treatment. This ensures protection against oxidation. The glass diffuser is glued to the heat sink to remain waterproof. For this purpose, the glass surface is microtextured, which generates a uniform and homogeneous light distribution.

With the design of the Flos Casting Concrete outdoor floor lamp, Vincent Van Duysen pays homage to a grand member of his guild. The famous architect Le Corbusier designed the Indian planned city of Chandigarh in the middle of the 20th century and gave the newly created seat of government in the provinces of Punjab and Haryana a series of brutalist buildings predominantly using concrete. A similar lamp design by Le Corbusier from 1952 and the characteristic material led to the reinterpretation by the Belgian architect Van Duysen for Flos.

The floor lamp for outdoor use Flos Casting Concrete dissolves solidity and roughness in favor of flowing, round shapes. The lamp is only 32 cm high and its light shines directly downwards and illuminates the recess within the characteristic, clearly defined geometric shape. The light fixture is simply mounted on a cement cast base. When several light fixtures are arranged together along stairs, walls or paths, they accentuate the architecture and landscape architecture in a particularly impressive way. Reinforcing fibers are integrated in the cement cast under pressure. The satined polycarbonate diffuser lies against the heat sink to ensure water resistance.

Cleaning instructions by the manufacturer: Keep the light fixture clean to prevent dirt deposit on the grids or screw heads. On steel parts use dedicated cleaners only. Use a soft cloth and neutral soap to clean the device. Keep away from aggressive agents and chemical substances (e.g. fertilizer, weedkiller, lime). We recommend to install the luminaire on a concrete pedestal.
