Walter Monici

Walter Monici

The Italian architect and designer Walter Monici owes his recognition in the lighting field to his collaborative work with the Lumina lighting brand. He also designed light fixtures before Lumina was founded in 1973. Because of his extensive knowledge of mechanics and technique, Walter Monici intensively dedicated himself to the function of desk lights. According to him, function is harmony the key element of good design. Because, in his opinion, an object's appearance results from the sum of technical decisions it is of secondary importance.

Walter Monici created numerous timeless light fixtures by following this approach. He devised Tangram, a collection of table, floor and wall lamps characterized by adjustable arms, for the famous Lumina brand in 1991. For the first time, he achieved a complete flexibility in all possible directions with only two springs. By looking at the Tangram light, Walter Monici's design approach is obvious: the technical issue, in other words the complete flexibility, stands above the stylish aspect.
