Tobia Scarpa

Tobia Scarpa

Tobia Scarpa is an Italian designer and architect. He made famous light designs for Flos, like the Cocoon collection he developed together with Achille Castiglioni.

Scarpa was born in 1935 in Venice and was the son of the famous architect Carlo Scarpa. After completing his architecture studies, Tobia Scarpa first worked at the Murano glass workshops as a designer, then opened his studio for architecture and design with his wife, Afra Bianchin he had met at the university, in 1960. Together, Afra and Tobia Scarpa developed lights and other products for many international brands.

Innovative materials and manufacturing processes characterize Tobi Scarpa's light fixtures. The Cocoon lights, for example, are obtained with a special method. They are made of extremely fine resin fibres which are sprayed on a revolving structure, until a thick, web-like cocoon has been formed, which can serve as a diffuser.
