Ernesto Gismondi

Ernesto Gismondi is the Italian lighting company Artemide founder and also operates as a lighting designer. Ernesto Gismondi is married to designer and Artemide vice-president Carlotta de Bevilacqua.

He designed the classic pendant lights Nur, the unique Miconos lights and the colourful Metacolor light column, all available by Artemide.

From 1964 to 1984, Gismondi was a professor for rocket science at the Polytechnic School of Milan. He was also active in politics and committed to the Italian Industrial Designers Association, ADI.

Gismondi was awarded numerous prizes as a designer and as an entrepreneur. He received the Italian Order of Merit for Labour, "Cavaliere del Lavoro" from the Italian President in 2008. Ernesto Gismondi's products were also distinguished with awards like the European Design Prize and the Compasso d'Oro.

Ernesto Gismondi's lights have a distinctive shape and functional clarity, always paired with an emotional dimension. The boldly vaultedNur pendant light exudes calm and cosiness, the Piroscafo bollard light is reminiscent of a bent boat chimney and provides ponds and pools with unique accents. Innovation plays a significant role for Ernesto Gismondi's lamps. He uses the possibilities offered by modern LED technology in terms of shape and lighting technology, for example with the ethereal Discovery light or the Metacolor floor lamp, which glows in many colours.
