Bertjan Pot

Bertjan Pot is a young Dutch designer who is especially famous for his Random Light light fixture. Many of his extravagant lamps and furniture pieces have been produced by Moooi, like the Random Light. Bertjan Pot's designs are characterized by experimental shapes and a playful approach to materials.

Bertjan Pot was born on May 26, 1975, in Nieuwleusen, Netherlands. He studied design at the Design Academy Eindhoven and started a career as a product designer in collaboration with Daniel White at Studio Monkey Boys. He has been working alone at the Bertjan Pot Studio since 2003.

Bertjan Pot has worked with leading design companies, such as Moooi, Arco and Established & Sons.

His creative process always starts with the material, whose properties and characteristics eventually lead to a product. During his studies, Pot developed a great interest in textile and woven structures, which now make the basis for his designs. Bertjan Pot's graduation project was a knitted lamp made of resin-soaked fabric, in a way a prototype of the famous lights to come and the start of Bertjan Pot's lighting design.

The Random Light is named after the shade's random pattern, crated with resin-soaked yarn. Pot often wraps an object in textile or other materials, then removes the object, leaving only the wrapping which becomes the object itself.

Today Random Light by Moooi is available in different versions and is one the label's best-known products. The Carbon Chair, also designed for Moooi, is closely related to the iconic lamp. Its seat is made of resin-soaked carbon fibre which produces a unique visual effect thanks to its irregular, dense structure.

Other designs have been inspired by nature, yet developed with the latest technology. Moooi Heracleaum resembles a tree branch with small buds or leaves which softly glow thanks to small LEDs.
