Catellani & Smith
Fil De Fer Collection

The Fil de Fer lamps by Catellani & Smith have spherical diffusers made of intertwined metal wire, with small lamps illuminating the interior. The collection is one of Enzo Catellani's favourite designs. It includes luminaires for indoor and outdoor use in various sizes, among them floor lamps, pendant lights and table lamps. Originally, Fil de Fer was created for a specific lighting project but ended up not getting used. Instead Enzo Catellani adopted the design into the standard catalgue of Catellani & Smith in 2002, creating an icon with a simple concept and a strong, nearly magical effect.

All Fil de Fer lamps feature a diffuser made of aluminium wire, bent and intertwined by hand. This makes each luminaire into a unique piece with one-of-a-kind details. The light, emitted by the small LED lamps spread out inside the sphere, makes the wire gleam and projects a lively play of light and shadow into its surroundings.

The aluminium wire is either kept with its natural colour or anodized in gold, brass or silver, depending on the model. Structures and ceiling canopies match in chrome, nickel or gold anodized. The sculptural Uomo Della Luce lamps are an exception, because here the diffuser is held by a figurine made of raw iron. The simple silhouette and the iron's rough character emphasize the elegant effect of the artfully wound, delicate and sparkling diffuser ball.
