About the Collection Bocci 84
The lighting object 84 by Bocci associates glass and copper wire in a single design that reveals its complexity with all its details. The collection includes suspensions, ceiling lamps, floor lamps and table lamps featuring minimal metallic structures or unobtrusive suspensions leaving the stage to the diffuser balls. The design is signed by Omer Arbel. 84 was developed in 2015 and has been included in the Bocci portfolio since 2017.
For designing the elegant 84 diffusers, the Bocci team uses its new insights from past designs and developed its own glass manufacturing techniques. Because glass and metallic wire must be combined into a unity to create 84, it must be precisely taken into consideration how the various materials expand in the heat.
To create 84, white glass must be inserted in a basket of thin copper wire and soaked in clear glass. When the glass blower blows air in this mould, the white glass is gently pressed through the copper net's mesh and forms soft cloud-like bulges inside the thick transparent glass. The folds created by the copper net are also visible. This detail may be different on each 84 exemplar and turns it into a unique piece. Also the small bubbles of white glass, possible air inclusions and the balls'shape and diameter can differ from one exemplar to the other. These imperfections and impredictable details lend the 84 lighting objects the character of a congealed smoke cloud that floats with lightness and exudes an impression of softness.
84 is available as a LED and xenon version. The xenon versions have the advantage of a very good and natural colour rendering of Ra 100, while the LED convinces with low energy consumption and a long life-span.
It should be noted that 84 provides a rather atmospherical light that is not sufficient to illuminate a room, but emphasizes above all the glass diffuser's special material. Bocci 84 is rather an artistic lighting object than a light fixture in the usual sense of the world. The copper net lends the light a reddish warm note.
The extended collection offers further models on request, among them suspensions with diverse kinds of suspensions, depending on the model with up to 61 light balls and with cables of special lengths of up to 30 m. Above a specific number of balls, the cable lengths cannot be adjusted anymore, but are determined by Bocci. When ordering, the wished shortest and longest cable lengths must be mentionned.
Also vertical floor lamps and ceiling lamps are possible in impressive lengths and are suitable above all for architectural projects, for example for atriums and stairwells, hotel foyers and other high-class surroundings.
