The suspensions 21 by Bocci are delicately shimmering lighting objects of precious china. They were designed in 2002 and have been available in an extended collection as single suspensions and multiple suspensions since 2007. Because it is possible to choose the number of shades, the shape and the type of ceiling rose, the kind of lamp and the cable lengths, one can create the desired light fixture. The design is from Omer Arbel.
The conical light shades are reminiscent at first sight of loosely rolled textiles with soft folds, but are made of china. It is a thin china layer with rounded edges, placed on a conical structure. The lateral edges are pressed together and form a raised seam that characterizes the light fixture and lends each light shade an individual note. Each Bocci 21 porcelain shade has the same shape and size, yet is a unique piece with individual features.
The inner structure is made of heat-resistant borosilicate glass and contains the lamp. It is closed by a silicone diffuser below, so that the light's glare is reduced and the light is diffuse in every direction. Because of the delicate, diaphanous porcelain, it is especially charming. The light's inner side is glazed to improve the light distribution. The external side remains untreated and rough, lending the material softness and putting the noble material's pure beauty to the fore.
The appealing shapes of the Bocci 21 even have a strong presence, when the light is turned off, yet turn into a fabulous eyecatcher with fascinating depth thanks to the sheen of its light sources. The multiple suspensions are partly designed in such a manner that the shades nestled to another and remind of complex organical entities, of shells and barnacles growing on rocks.
The light is not strong enough to brighten a room entirely. Instead Bocci 21 is a decorative lighting object and a flexible resources for interior design. Next to the here offered models, further ceiling roses for single lights and additional multiple versions, featuring up to 50 light shades suspended on a rectangular or round ceiling rose, are available on request. The cable lengths of these models cannot be cut by the user, but must be determined by Bocci. When ordering, only the desired lengths of the shortest and of the longest cables must be mentioned. Standard lengths reach from 30 cm to 3 m, special lengths up to 30 m are possible. In this way, large rooms, foyers, high stairwells and atriums can be decorated in an extraordinary and poetical manner.
It is possible to choose between two kinds of lamps: the LED version has the advantages of a lower electrical consumption, a long life-span and a comparatively lower heat development. The xenon versions scores on the contrary with a very natural colour rendering of Ra 100.
