About the Collection Belux Cloud

The light collection Belux Cloud is a collaboration with the American architect Frank Gehry. According to the Pritzker prize recipient, light is one of the core topic of his creative work and with the poetic Cloud lights, Gehry expresses "the feeling of freedom and excentricity". These lights must be understood as an homage to Isamo Noguchi's famous Akari lights of paper.

The Cloud light shades with sculptural shape are characterized by several irregular folds, bends, bulges and indentations and have the appearance of an airy fair-weather cloud and a large, soft snow ball. The impressive collection comprises LED suspensions of various sizes, a LED floor lamp and a table lamp for G9 lamps. They have in common a voluminous yet delicate, paper-like shade with an invisible lamp in its centre.

The first prototype of Cloud had complexly shaped packing paper cups connected with staples. However this material was not suitable for a serial production and for lighting and security technical reasons, alternative materials were looked for. The result of the research was a several times finished polyester fleece, similar to a slightly fibrous paper, yet flexibly shapable, tear-resistant, hardly inflammable, ageing-resistant and easily cleanable. During the production process of Belux Cloud, sheets of polyester fleece are deep drawn into cups and stiffened with a ring of transparent polycarbonate. These cups are put together with small synthetic clips and form the shade that, depending on the size, comprises any desired cups. The random folded structure formed during the production process can have its shape modified simply by buckling or pushing in. For this reason, any user can slightly modify the shape of his Cloud light, despite the given primary shape.

The Belux collection includes suspensions in four sizes that can be pressed into a thickness of 10 cm only and unfolded by the client in just a few steps into their temporary final shape.

The Cloud floor lamp has a thin, straight steel stem and a robust, square base. The elongated Cloud XL suspension is best-suited for illuminating long dining tables and generally for rooms with a small height. It is suspended on two thin ropes from the ceiling and supplied centrally via a white ceiling rose. The largest and voluminous model in the Belux collection is called Mamacloud, serves as a oversized lighting sculpture in large rooms with high ceilings and has sound-absorbing properties. Beside the standard lengths of two to seven meters, Mamacloud can also take different shapes when reshaped by hand. It adapts in conference rooms and also in bars, lounges or hotel lobbies. The small Babycloud table lamp is especially stylish thanks to its base of walnut and a chromed steel structure. It can be placed for example in living rooms and bedrooms on night tables, shelves, side tables or sideboards.

The Belux Cloud light collection was awarded the Good Design and the FX Design Award.

Care instructions by the manufacturer: The light fixture must be regularly vacuumed at lowest level. It should not be rubbed, there is a risk of fuzzing. The light should not be in contact with oily and fat damp, because there is a risk of dirt.
