About the Collection Artemide IN-EI

The IN-EI collection by Artemide was designed by star designer Issey Miyake, and combines modern technologies with Japanese lighting tradition. The result are complex shapes and a harmonious balance between light and shadows. Each light in the collection has its own name and a unique shape: the snail IN-EI Mendori table lamp, the large IN-EI Minomushi suspension and floor lamp and the spiral-shaped IN-EI Tatsuno-Otoshigo.

The light shades' special shapes are based on mathematical principles. Issey Miyake and his Reality Lab design studio developed a mathematical program based on 3D geometry, first for manufacturing clothes able to be folded flat and take three-dimensional shapes. The IN-EI collection masterly demonstrates that this principle can also apply to lighting design. The light shades are made of textile-like fabric from recycled PET bottles. Thanks to the smart folding technique and a special surface treatment, it is possible to fold the IN-EI lights flat, and return them to their original shape.

"IN-EI" means "shadow" in Japanese. Where there is light, there is also shadow. Whoever understands light is also master of shadow. Each light in the IN-EI series by Artemide presents an especially interesting, novel art of spreading light.
