Catellani & Smith designer lights evoke associations with the warm sun, the mystic moon and the life-giving power of light. And although the round and golden discs have become the hallmark of Catellani & Smith lights, the Italian producer has been varying and developing this basic idea since its foundation in 1989. Meanwhile, the company owners, the Italian smith Enzo Catellani and the English architect Logan Smith, have been dedicated to designing and producing hand-crafted decorative lights and every-day objects based on their non-conformist ideas. While their first collection is characterized by flex tubing that are for example used for the poetic light tree Catellani & Smith Albero della Luce, the 1995's collection Catellani & Smith Luce D'Oro focuses on the color of light. It is primarily the golden light of the sun or the fire that is represented by these Catellani & Smith wall and ceiling lamps. Meanwhile, the following Catellani & Smith lights refer clearly to the illuminating power of the moon, like the Catellani & Smith Fil de Fer, an aluminium wire sphere, and Catellani & Smith Stchu-Moon with its characteristic round shape and irregular hand-crafted surface. In 2004, the collection Catellani & Smith Postkris' opens a new chapter: for the first time colour is added. Light that interacts with colour and shape creates an inter-play of transparency and contrasts while the round shape is kept. With his latest idea of using LED technology for Catellani & Smith Eco-Logic Ligh' Enzo Catellani sets again new standards in lighting design. LEDs are ecological and environmentally friendly reducing CO² emissions by up to 20 percent and allowing energy savings of up to 80 percent. LEDs have no maintenance expenses and their life is almost infinite. Yet the most stunning discovery is the quality of their light: a meditation light, a rather relaxing and contemplative one, reducing the tension in the lit space. The LEDs are definitely made to be used in the construction of a star-lit sky, but illuminate as well golden and silver coloured discs in a very intensive and striking way. In other words, Catellani & Smith succeded in reinterpreting the celestial illuminants once again.
